Jay Surboards- About Us Film
In 2019 Mhairi approached Jay Surfboards after admiring Jay’s artistic photos of hand-made surfboards on Instagram. She sought out to make a film for the company as she knew this was an interesting craft to explain, and that it would be particularly cinematic to shoot.

Jay is one of the few people who hand-crafts surfboards in Scotland. He also repairs boards, as well as makes resin art with the resin waste. His boards can be made customisable to a client’s wishes, but it is clear through his use of colour and style that Jay is creative, experimental and his boards stand-out.
Jay was on board with having a film made. In fact, he had just been a part of a commercial for a Carling Beer, so he had recent exposure to the camera. And so, we got to work.
First Mhairi shot the board making process. The shots blended into each other well, but something was missing. Mhairi asked fellow videographers for suggestions, and one suggested an interview.
It was something Mhairi hadn’t planned on, but she was excited about the thought and returned to shoot an interview. The result was just what was needed to accompany the flowing craft shots.
The process of making a surfboard is very niche and so the making shots, without explanation might have created more confusion than satisfied curiosity.
Jay is an easy-going guy, and we had great fun working on this one. It was super to take our time to make this film.
Mhairi took the opportunity to improve her editing skillset and learnt how to animate pop-up photos. Adding a bit of movement to the photos made them seem 3D, and therefore energised.
Jay was excited with the result and showcased it on his Instagram account alongside the artistic images of surfboards that Mhairi first fell in love with.
